Acton's Lock
New Build Mixed Use Residential and Commercial Development
Acton’s Lock is a five-storey mixed use development located close to London Fields, East London. Rackham was retained as principle contractor to deliver the project under a full D&B contract comprising of building structure, external envelope, building services and internal fit-out. The development transforms a confined brown field plot bordering the Union Canal into a striking building comprising 25 apartments and 1 commercial unit.
To maximise the available internal space, the design features a concrete frame, cantilevered over the canal on the upper storeys while abutting the bank at ground level. The entire concrete frame is supported by bored pile foundations.
The site was formerly used for industrial purposes so was classified as contaminated and required substantial land remediation. Another challenge came in the form of the building’s close proximity to the canal, making access and logistics management a high priority during the build.
This technical project showcases both Rackham’s D&B capabilities, and our ability to execute a unique and structurally challenging project.
